Sleep Awareness Week 2017

sleep awareness week

This week is Sleep Awareness Week 2017 (3-9 July) and this year the theme is ‘Better sleep = smarter, safer workplaces’.

In today’s fast paced world, the quality of our sleep is vital to our health. Getting enough good quality sleep helps our daily performance, mood, energy levels and relationships. It also reduces the risk of drowsy driving and accidents at work. In order to be safe and productive at work, we must prioritise and maximise our sleep.

Good sleep habits include:

  • Adults should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night
  • Stick to a consistent sleep routine - aim to go to bed at the same time each night
  • Relax for an hour before going to bed to wind down
  • Don’t go to bed with a full or empty stomach
  • Keep distractions such as technology out of the bedroom
  • Avoid napping
  • Avoid cigarettes, alcohol and afternoon caffeine

If you’re not sleeping well or are showing symptoms of sleep disorders, talk to your GP about booking a sleep study with Genesis SleepCare.

Contact Genesis SleepCare on 1800 155 225 or visit the Sleep Health Foundation’s website for further information about Sleep Awareness Week.

It’s time to prioritise your patients’ sleep health

Prioritise your patients sleep health

Sleep disorders are a large and under-recognised problem in Australia. Although many people realise the importance of getting enough sleep, they may be unaware that sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can be a contributing factor to serious health problems including cardiac disease. Whilst OSA is being increasingly identified, it is thought that over 70% of individuals with the condition remain undiagnosed.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea include (but are not limited to):

  • Snoring

  • Waking up feeling un-refreshed

  • Excessive daytime tiredness

  • Drowsy driving

  • Problems initiating/staying asleep

  • High blood pressure

Risks of Untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

Sleep disorders impose a huge burden on patients. There is a significant impact upon quality of life and an increased risk of life-threatening health complications.

Recent research published in the Journal of The American College of Cardiology1 highlighted that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor associated with:

  • Increased risk of stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and coronary heart disease

  • Increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality

If OSA is left untreated, patients also have at a higher risk of:

  • High blood pressure

  • Motor vehicle accidents

  • Workplace accidents

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Decreased sex drive

  • Type 2 diabetes

Obstructive sleep apnoea and other sleep disorders can be diagnosed with comprehensive and objective sleep testing, available from Genesis SleepCare. Experienced Sleep Specialists are able to recommend and implement treatment options while providing comprehensive follow-up and support.
